1. Regular Maintenance & Repairs

Ongoing, routine work to ensure facilities and amenities are high-quality and meeting desired standards

  • Maintenance and cleanliness were top priorities across all survey methods.

2. New Facilities & Amenities

Entirely new site elements proposed to be developed.

  • Most requested new amenities were additional paths (52% of respondents) and play / active recreation (46%).

3. Access & Circulation

The locations of defined paths for pedestrian and wheeled access throughout the park, including the entryways, signage, and wayfinding.

  • New nature paths, improved bike/ scooter parking and wayfinding, and better access into the park received numerous mentions.

4. Nature & Ecology

The health of environmental systems in the park, including plants, wildlife, water and soil.

  • Lake Clara Meer was one of the areas with most potential for improvement. Clear Creek was cited as one of the most special and desired experiences.

5. Events, Programs, & Vendors

The quality and array of activities, services, and retail offered in the park by PPC and others.

  • 77% of respondents would prefer 0-3 major, free public events per year. 86% would prefer 0-3 major, private ticketed events per year, with 60% preferring NONE or 1.

6. Operations & Management

The organizing structure of park operations and management, including revenue and expenses.

Safety was noted as a top priority, including lighting.

2. Baseline Improvements

Option A Description

This concept introduces new opportunities for play, gathering, and recreation across the site. An augmented loop trail at Lake Clara Meer uses boardwalks to fly out over the lake, and connects the loop trail along the waterfront at the Aquatic Center. A new play garden experience is introduced near the 12th street entrance to complement the Noguchi Playscape, and new sports courts are added in the active heart of the park. Along the Beltline near Clear Creek, a pedestrian boardwalk provides access to new park areas to the north which will include a sloped-lawn amphitheater event space, adventure play trail, playgrounds, and a grand new entry plaza at the north corner.

Seven Defined Areas are further described:

OPTION A CONCEPTS

  1. Along Piedmont Ave: ADA-accessible nature play trail
  2. Lake Clara Meer: Lakefront loop trail with seating, boardwalks over the water, overlooks, and play elements along the path
  3. Active Oval: Additional trees in the Active Oval along the running track, relocated sand volleyball with 4 new courts, addition of a Challenger/Miracle Field
  4. Athletic Courts: 3 new basketball and 6 new pickleball courts in the active “heart” of the park
  5. Legacy Fountain Area: Additional trees and activated trellis picnic space
  6. Clear Creek: Alternate pedestrian walkway along the Beltline providing additional access to Piedmont Commons to the north
  7. North Parcels: New amphitheater gathering space, adventure play trail, multiple new playgrounds, grand northern entry

Option B Description

This concept amplifies natural exploration and scenic views, with new play and paths woven throughout the park. Additional trails at Lake Clara Meer introduce new picturesque viewpoints. New picnic areas and trails are added around the front lawn near the Noguchi Playscape, and new basketball and pickleball courts are added in the active heart. An extensive network of winding elevated pedestrian boardwalks and trails is added along the Beltline near Clear Creek to allow for increased foot traffic and introduce a new way to experience the watershed. The new park spaces to the north prioritize passive recreation with walking trails, views, lawns, gardens, and increased creek access.

  1. Along Piedmont Ave: Picnic areas, additional paths
  2. Lake Clara Meer: Additional lakefront trails, a new picture point, and buffer vegetation
  3. Active Oval: Rework layout of athletic fields, create a central tree allee with seating, add 3 new sand volleyball courts and a Challenger/Miracle Field
  4. Athletic Courts: 3 new basketball courts, swap existing basketball near tennis center with 4 new pickleball courts
  5. Legacy Fountain Area: New playground around the existing fountain and activated trellis space
  6. Clear Creek: Elevated canopy walk along the Beltline with expanded creek access trails and crossings and a new connection to Monroe Dr
  7. North Parcels: Walking trails, pastoral lawns, gardens, wildlife habitat protection spaces, increased creek access and sightlines
